Why it’s important to fix damaged teeth

Your confidence levels decrease when you’re ashamed of how your smile looks. Severely decayed teeth ruin your appearance and give others the impression that you aren’t as healthy as you should be. At Every Smile Family Dentistry and Orthodontics, we understand that your smile plays an important role in first impressions. If you have a damaged tooth, we recommend covering the imperfection with a custom-made dental crown.

A dental crown will enhance your appearance and restore oral health. After this procedure, you won’t feel the need to conceal your smile. Instead, you’ll want to show it off to everyone!

Restoring a Beautiful, Toothy Smile

Procedures to restore and strengthen your oral health, tooth integrity, and appearance of your beautiful smile.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are used to restore fractured, decayed, broken, or weak teeth. Our teeth are strong, yet everyday wear and tear can easily ruin their integrity, which could result in frequent tooth pain, temperature sensitivity, or even tooth loss.

Dental crowns are used to finalize restorative procedures, such as root canal therapy. After we completely remove the infected tooth pulp, a custom-made crown is placed over the repaired tooth to provide strength and protection.

If you have a single missing tooth, we recommend a crown attached to a dental implant. Not only will this procedure correct the empty space, it will also replace the tooth root, which is responsible for stimulating bone.

Dental Implants

Missing teeth are unattractive and negatively affect oral health. When a missing tooth isn’t replaced, surrounding teeth can shift, creating additional dental issues. For single missing teeth, we will make a small incision in the gums and surgically place a titanium dental implant into viable jawbone.

Once the implant, which resembles a screw, has completely healed (four to six months), a dental crown is attached. This procedure replaces the entire tooth, rather than just the visible portion. Dental crowns are created to blend with surrounding teeth for a seamless replacement.

If the replacement tooth is seen when you smile, we will recommend a porcelain crown. Porcelain is stain resistant and looks like a natural tooth. We will match the porcelain to the color of surrounding teeth so that your restoration doesn’t stand out from the rest of your smile.

Patients who receive this procedure often experience an increase in confidence. A beautiful smile can do wonders for romantic and professional relationships. When you have all of your teeth, your oral health will remain intact, if you commit to a simple daily oral hygiene routine (twice daily brushing and flossing).

What to Expect When Getting Dental Crowns

At Every Smile Family Dentistry and Orthodontics, dental crowns require two visits.

Your First Visit

At the first dental appointment, we will examine how the damaged tooth impacts your smile. They will recommend the best material to fashion the crown from. Possible materials include porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and metal.

Porcelain crowns are aesthetically pleasing and blend with natural teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are made from strong metal, but have a thin layer of porcelain over the metal, which creates a tooth-colored restoration, but is durable and sturdy. For back teeth, which aren’t seen when you smile, we recommend metal crowns. While metal crowns don’t resemble natural teeth, they are the strongest restoration possible. When you chew, your back teeth take on a lot of pressure, which makes metal crowns the ideal material.

After examining the damage, we will prepare the tooth for the upcoming restoration. They will remove decay and bacteria, as well as a thin layer of enamel, which allows the crown to lay flat against the damaged tooth.

Next, they will take a dental impression of the affected tooth and the rest of your smile. The impression will be sent to a lab, where experienced technicians will make your permanent dental crown from the desired material. Before you leave this appointment, we will place a temporary crown over the damaged tooth. This will provide minimal protection while the permanent restorative device is created.

Your Second Visit

When you schedule your second dental visit, we will remove the temporary device and attach your permanent crown. They will make sure the dental crown fits properly and is aesthetically pleasing (unless it’s a metal crown and not visible). The crown will be bonded over the repaired tooth with a special adhesive. With proper care, you can expect the dental crown to last 20-30 years.
